In 2023, friends Jared and Van sparked a new venture in the quiet town of Coalville, Utah, thanks to a marathon prank that took an unexpected twist. Jared had convinced Van to sign up for a marathon, only for Van to realize he was the only one actually running! Committed, Van started training for the Ogden Marathon, and on one of his long runs, he passed an abandoned building that caught his attention. Intrigued, he snapped a picture of it, and soon after, he and Jared were discussing the building during their daily doughnut runs to Mirror Lake Station.

Excited by the possibilities, Jared did some digging and found out the property was for sale. “If we can work out the easement, we could even add a drive-thru,” he told Van, and soon the pair went to work. With determination, help from friends, and support from neighbors, they navigated the challenges, purchased the building, and began its transformation into what Coalville had never seen before: a dirty soda and coffee shop.

Our story

Their vision was more than just a business. Together with skilled craftsmen, they carefully restored the century-old building, preserving its original blacksmith-scorched ceilings while adding unique details like barrel ceilings, white oak doors, quartz counters, and custom wainscot. The renovation celebrated the building’s past, once a blacksmith shop and later a butcher’s shop run by a beloved local named Mick, who was known for his warm presence and community spirit.

Honoring that legacy, they named the space “Mix’ Place,” symbolizing their mission to mix flavors, friends, and history. Today, Mix’ Place is Coalville’s go-to spot for mixed sodas, hot drinks, great food, and a welcoming vibe. It’s designed as a space where everyone—from kids to adults—can feel at home, safe, and connected. Van and Jared invite the community to come to Mix’ Place to enjoy not only the food and drinks but the sense of belonging they’ve poured into every detail.
